Women and Welfare
Ms. Angela White
Secretary
Founding Board Member
Angela is a founding member of the Board of Directors of
Women and Welfare and serves as its Secretary. She is a leader, teacher, mentor
and passionate advocate for motivating Black Americans, especially teenagers, to
obtain a higher education and independent success. A native of Virginia, and the
eldest of 3 siblings, 4 half siblings, and 1 stepsibling, at 38 years of age,
Angela has defied all odds. She was a single welfare mother at 17 years of age.
After giving birth to her second child at age 20, Angela decided that she needed
to practice what she was going to preach to her children—work hard, get a
college education, and always be able to provide for yourself. So at the age of
23, Angela enrolled at then Strayer College and begun her plight to complete an
Undergraduate Degree. Working full time and attending school at night, she often
juggled her two children from sitter to sitter, and lived on microwave dinners
and minimal sleep. She started her own sewing business, where she worked extra
time on weekends to make clothes for her children, crafts for craft fairs, and
clothes for others to earn extra income to support her family. Her determination
and efforts paid off. In 1992 Angela received her Bachelors Degree and her
Graduate Degree in 1996.
Angela is a Senior Project Manager with IBM and an Adjunct
Professor at Strayer University where she teaches to non-traditional students.
Angela obtained both her Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Information
Systems and her Masters Degree in Business Administration from Strayer
University. She recently achieved a major career milestone by obtaining her IBM
Project Management Certification. She also is PMI Certified and holds a Masters
Certificate in Project Management from George Washington University.
Angela once again defied all odds when she landed her Adjunct
position at Strayer University. Strayer traditionally does not hire Strayer
graduates to teach. She had such a strong passion and much determination to
teach and give back to the students at Strayer University that her persistence,
even substitute teaching for free, paid off when the Dean contacted her about
teaching. Angela doesn’t look at her teaching as a job but rather her
contribution to help others. She often testifies to her students her passion to
help them succeed.
Angela is committed to community service. She strongly
believes in giving back a portion of her blessings. Over the years she has
supported every organization and activity her children have participated in,
currently supports her son’s high school, where often she is the only Black
American parent, and is active at the University her now 20-year-old daughter
attends. Her home has always been the community house on the block to many
children.
Angela is active in her church, where she sings in the Gospel
Choir and supports her son in his music ministry. Angela contributes all of her
success and accomplishments to God. She strongly believes that it was her faith
that allowed her to defy all odds. She was blessed with many mentors and
supporters over the years, and now believes in giving some of that back to those
coming behind her.
