Never Too Late To Start Saving

Yes, you know you need to be saving for the future, but you’re not! So what’s going on here? The simple answer is that you believe all this savings stuff is for other folks.

Get a grip. Though you’ve ignored this advice for years, it’s not too late to start saving now — yes, even if you’re not making the kind of money you want or are on a fixed income. Sometimes you have to take tiny baby steps in order to get started. Don’t be ashamed of this. Some change in behavior is better than none at all!

$ Shop With Cash $

It’s easy to buy on impulse and lose track of what you’re spending when you use debit and credit cards. Pay with cash so you can see and feel yourself parting with your money. Psychologically, this will make you mindful of where your money is going and exactly how much you have left in your wallet. Before long, you’ll notice that you’re hanging onto your dollars and actually have a little more cash on hand because now you think before you buy. Put some money in the bank regularly, even if it’s only a few bucks, and watch your moolah grow!

$ Don’t Dis’ Loose Change! $

If you just can’t yet get yourself to routinely bank a set amount of money, start tossing your loose change into a jar at the end of the day. Throw a few singles in there too from time to time. This cash will add up before you know it. But don’t buy stuff with it — bank it!

OK, if “saving for the future” still feels too vague and far away, give your savings a specific purpose within a shorter timeframe. What’s most important is to get into the habit of putting some funds aside. And if you have the option, automatically deduct this money from your wages before you get paid. Though you may be saving for a certain occasion, when the time comes you may just decide that you like having this cash reserve and seeing it grow. You might not decide to spend it after all!
