Say It Loud: There Are Plenty of Black Males to Be Proud Of!

We all know the negative statistics. But how about the many African American males who are excelling in our community? They deserve their ’props but usually fall invisible to their counterparts whose misdeeds and troubles occupy the focus of attention day and night.

But for every tale of Black male dysfunction and failure, it is YOUR responsibility to counter this negativity with the many successes and achievements of those Black males you know. These men, at all socioeconomic levels, spend their lives succeeding in their jobs, serve as warm and supportive spouses in longterm marital relationships, and raise healthy children who are going on to follow in their footsteps. AASF encourages the study of these individuals’ success strategies — many of whom are into their 10th, 25th, 30th, 40th and 50th++ years of marriage, but who seldom receive recognition for their personal, professional, and marital stability.

Push back on messages that tell you that all Black males are slackers, failures and headed for prison. Negative expectations can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Showcase those who are surviving, thriving, and succeeding in your community. Give them their due. More importantly, be sure that others do too!
